Shirley Yip is a writer-director who explores human relationships and cross-cultural experiences in her work. Born in China and raised in Canada, her stories are fueled by unresolved emotions and relentless struggles formulated at the intersection of her Asian roots and Western education. Shirley was a 2022 BIPOC TV & Film Episodic Writers’ Lab Fellow with her drama series House of Fortune, a participant of the 2022 Reelworld Institute Emerging 20 Screenwriting program with her feature script Orchid Dream, and a Finalist at the 2021 ATX Festival Pitch Competition. Her comedy pilot Peeping Tam was shortlisted for the 2022 Sundance Episodic Lab. Her work has been placed in Austin Film Festival, Script Pipeline, among others. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Drama from the University of Toronto and Professional Certificates in Screenwriting and Directing from UCLA.
Shirley is currently a Bell Media Prime TV Program Resident at the Canadian Film Centre, working in a story room led Ins Choi (Kim’s Convenience) and developing a new TV comedy series. In addition, she is in post-production with her short film Marriage Interview.
